BEREA, Ky. (LEX 18) — Strep, stomach virus, and a few Flu cases kept students out of Berea Community Schools and kept custodial staff very busy Tuesday.

"On Friday, our attendance was 90% so it already had dropped district-wide to 90%, and then it's dropped again. I mean, that trend was going. And it was because of the same thing," said Berea Community Schools Superintendent Dr. Diane Hatchett.

She told LEX 18's Claire Kopsky that there was standing room only in the nurse's office, so schools were closed on Tuesday and will be closed again on Wednesday.

Custodians spent Tuesday wiping down any surfaces that students and teachers could touch, including lockers, desks, and door handles.

In the last month, all of the district's principals and the superintendent have had the stomach bug, and Hatchett said it is reminiscent of last year. Last year, schools were closed because they had three straight days of low attendance.
